Anemari is a dedicated researcher, talented storyteller, and a consummate professional in everything she does. It was a pleasure working with her in my capacity as a publisher at Tafelberg Publishers.
I would love to go back to South Africa and build on the contacts I made and the knowledge I have acquired about the history and politics of the country. I feel there are several more documentaries to be made there, in collaboration with Anemari Jansen who is an excellent journalist and researcher.
Anemari is helping me to bring my book into fruition, what a privilege to have someone so competent, yet so kind to assist me towards my goal. She is highly skilled and plugged in, into the sacred creative process. Anemari has a rare skill to hold a safe space and facilitate the editing process at the same time.
Anemari is a creative author of thrilling stuff and an excellent editor.
He does not make the poison himself.
A poison dart frog synthesises none of his own poison. He takes it from what he eats — the ants, the mites, the small beetles and the centipedes of the leaf litter — and holds their alkaloids in the granular glands of his own skin until they are no longer theirs but his. Raise the same frog on clean food and he is harmless. Give him the diet back and the poison returns.
Writing a memoir works exactly this way. Nothing on the page is invented. It is what you have already taken in — the years, the losses, the people who marked you — carried long enough to become part of you, and it is potent for that reason and no other.
Which is why the chapters you would rather skip are the ones holding the book up. A reader can tell a life that was lived from a story that was assembled, and what separates them is the diet.
Thirty-one South Africans told their story
Koorsboomstories compiled a book from thirty-one contributors — musicians, broadcasters, journalists, advocates and pastors — each of whom sat down and gave an account of what hope has cost them. These are some of them.
